One of the most versatile musicians on the planet, Andre Previn has amassed considerable credentials as a jazz piano player, despite sculpture out sort out lives first-class honours degree degree as a Hollywood organizer and composer, and then a first authoritative music music director, piano player and composer. Always fluid, melodious and swinging, with elements of Bud Powell, Oscar Peterson and Horace Silver assorted with a faultless technique, Previn hasn't changed much over the decades simply canful always be counted upon for polished, dependable performances at the drop of a hat.

He started forte-piano lessons in his native Berlin earlier the Nazi menace forced his household to move to Paris in 1938 and the U.S. the following year. Settling in Los Angeles, the wunderkind Previn began working as a jazz pianist, an arranger for MGM, and a recording creative person for Sunset Records while tranquil in high schooling -- and by his 18th twelvemonth, his first recordings for RCA Victor had racked up significant gross sales. Originally swing-oriented, Previn ascertained boP in 1950 just ahead his inductance into the Army. Upon returning to Los Angeles, Previn went into overdrive, gigging as a jazz pianist, marking films and playing bedchamber euphony. Forming a legato boppish trio with Shelly Manne and Leroy Vinnegar, Previn scored a huge crossover hit with an album of jazz interpretations of My Fair Lady, which in turn lED to a series of like-minded albums of Broadway stacks and kicked off an industriousness trend.

By 1962, Previn started to make the conversion away from Hollywood toward becoming a full-time classical conductor, falling his jazz activities alone. He stayed away from nothingness for 27 eld, with the exceptions of a handful of roger Huntington Sessions with Ella Fitzgerald and classical violinist/dabbler Itzhak Perlman. Indeed, in 1984, he was quoted as saying that nothingness was "an expendable artistic creation form" for him. But in March 1989, curtly before resigning from the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a dispute with direction, Previn returned to jazz with a trio album for Telarc with Ray Brown and Joe Pass, display that he had non bemused an iota of his abilities. Since then, he has returned often to the studio as a jazz piano player for Telarc, Angel, Deutsche Grammophon and DRG when not freelancing as a director or composition authoritative rafts.

Researchers Unveil Vital Key To Cancer

University of Manchester scientists have uncovered the 3D structure of Mps1 - a protein that regulates the number of chromosomes during cellular phone division and thus has an all-important role in the prevention of cancer - which will pencil lead to the design of safer and more effectual therapies.

Mps1 belongs to the family unit of proteins called kinases. When subsets of these enzymes suit deregulated, cancer can be one of the outcomes - making them a critical target for research by oncologists. Over hundred of the 500 or so kinases have been shown to be associated with cancer, but so far scientists only experience the 3D structure of a smattering. Knowing the structure is critical for the conception of new kinase inhibitors as sanative agents, an area of enormous importance to the pharmaceutical industriousness. Over hundred kinase inhibitors are presently in clinical trials, and the revolutionary kinase inhibitor Glivec was approved for treating Leukaemia in the UK in 2001.

Mps1 is peculiarly important as it controls a 'checkpoint' that cells use to encourage accurate chromosome categorization during mitosis. Mps1 thus prevents aneuploidy, the change in the number of chromosomes that is nearly associated with cancer.

Dr Patrick Eyers and his team, including Hong Kong-born PhD scholar Matthew Chu, used Diamond Light Source (http://www.diamond.ac.uk), the UK's synchrotron facility, to further their research. Diamond can be described as a series of "super-microscopes" that industrial plant by sending electrons roughly a vast ring-shaped chamber at near the pep pill of light. As they circuit the chamber, the relativistic electrons give off synchrotron light in the form of X-rays, ultraviolet light and infrared emission beams. The extremely intense X-rays ar then channelled down a beamline where they hit a pure sample of the protein, allowing the researchers to "see" the protein's nuclear structure for the first base time.

Their structure revealed the pocket where Mps1 binds to ATP, the natural substrate from which Mps1 transfers a orthophosphate group to its cellular target proteins. Further work showed the protein in complex with the ATP-competitive inhibitor SP600125, a well-known but nonspecific inhibitor of many kinases, which revealed a secondary pocket non utilised by this compound. If a next-generation dose can be designed to specifically block this secondary pocket, it is hoped that Mps1 will be specifically disabled, killing chop-chop dividing cells such as those found in tumours.

The team hopes its work will allow chemists to aim an antineoplastic drug with fewer incline effects, allowing scientists to assess the relative importance of Mps1 inhibition in different disease indications, including those that are currently hard to treat such as lung and pancreatic cancers.

Dr Eyers, whose findings ar published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (August 2008), aforementioned: "The crystallalographic structures of only a few key "mitotic" kinases are presently known so we ar very early in the game. The scientific residential area has senior high hopes for developing novel "anti-mitotic" crab therapies victimization this method of structure-based drug figure.

"Mps1 is a rational target because of its critical function in preventing aneuploidy. We wanted to see what this protein looked like at the molecular level and, by revealing the active land site "lock", help design a new repressive "key" to physically block the ATP-binding site.

His colleague Dr Lydia Tabernero added: "This work presents the first-class honours degree crystallographic anatomical structure of human Mps1, an important regulator of chromosomal stability and a potential target in cancer therapy. Our research has revealed several of import structural features and extra binding sites that could be exploited for the development of specific Mps1 inhibitors."

Madonna - Hard Candy

For her eleventh studio album, ever-shrewd Madonna has teamed up with some of pop's biggest hit makers in her quest to keep on top of the game.
Usually a tastemaker herself, 'Hard Candy' sees the star tap into the already prevalent pop stylings of Timbaland and The Neptunes, who hog the production credits and place their trademark musical stamp all over the album. The brand of slick R 'n' B that makes them such in demand producers is the albums centre point, often outshining Madonna's pop sensibilities, to the effect that Madonna seems like a guest on her own record at times.
Heaps of sweet shop-related innuendo kicks off the album in the form of 'Candy Shop', which promises plenty of "heat" over the rest of the album. The chant "My sugar is raw, sticky and sweet" is strangely catchy, punctuated by smooth synths, computerised vocals and a funky guitar riff.
Next up is the lead single, and the first of a handful of Justin Timberlake collaborations, '4 Minutes'. It's typical Timbaland fare, with a punchy beat, marching band instrumentation, but it sounds more like JT featuring Madonna than her own track.
She is less smothered in the company of The Neptunes' Pharrell Williams, and in 'Give it 2 Me' she revisits her disco roots. It has a club anthem feel, with an insistent beat, cow bells, building up to an exhilarating crescendo.
Similarly, on the pulsating 'Heartbeat', Madonna seems more at home. Pharrell pipes up here and there with his distinctive backing vocals, but she's the star on this track.
'Miles Away' takes the album down a more intimate path, discussing her relationship with husband Guy Ritchie, and some of the lyrics are touchingly honest - "I guess we're at our best when we're miles away".
Attitude-laden 'She's Not Me' is a confident assertion of her dominance as the queen of pop, and the only woman for her husband. The jaunty, camp guitar and handclaps compliment her statement "I know I can do it better".
On 'Devil Wouldn't Recognise You', the main flaw of this album is most evident. The Timbaland production eerily echoes his much superior work with Justin Timberlake on 'Cry Me a River', down to the rain sound effects and vast beats. It doesn't even nearly match the genius of Timbaland's previous works. This blatant revisiting of old territory begs the question - Is Timbaland spreading himself too thinly?
Effortlessly catchy, 'Hard Candy' easily sucks the listener in with an assortment of pop treats - but the overlying impression it gives off is that Madonna and her coterie of collaborators are just going through the motions. It might give you a quick sugar rush, but there isn't enough substance here to put it down in the annals of pop.
Anyone else think Timbaland should take a well-deserved holiday?
